A semi-serious but very useful video on how to compensate exposure when working with a view camera and the bellows is extended.
With the invaluable help of Elisa and Lisa (and two precision rulers), we show step-by-step how to quickly and visually calculate the correction to apply to your exposure, using a Leonardo 8×10 mk2.

📏 Yes, there are arrows, laminated cards, and a bit of theatrical flair. But in the end, you’ll truly understand how it’s done.

In this second episode, we literally climbed with Giulio on Monte delle Canelle, surrounded by breathtaking views, biting cold, quick jokes, and some deep moments of concentration.
It’s a slightly playful way to tell a serious project: a new photo book about the mountains Giulio knows better than anyone else.

Because of the distance between us (350 km) and the usual mix of work and family commitments, Giulio and I try to meet up at least a couple of times a year for a mountain hike—once in winter and once in summer. More precisely, we head to the central Apennines: the mountains Giulio loves so much that he’s “written” (with light) not just two, but almost three photo books about them.

This year, I was especially happy to head down to Campo Felice, also to lend a hand with the launch of his Kickstarter campaign for the book Le mie montagne – A Story of the Velino Sirente (link at the top of the description). I went there to shoot a couple of behind-the-scenes videos—and to bring a few gifts: the 8×10 mk2 film holder, which you’ve already seen, and a 15×15 cm filter holder that I’ll talk about in the next video.

In this one, you’ll see some of the images being considered for the final selection before publication. But more than that, I wanted to share a glimpse of the lighthearted atmosphere that always sparks up when Giulio and I meet. I even tried—unsuccessfully—to translate some of the quirky expressions we use to show our mutual affection (like turning “sbolognamento” into “bubble bursting”). Hopefully, you’ll appreciate the effort.

A causa della distanza (350 km) e degli impegni con il lavoro e la famiglia, io e Giulio cerchiamo di incontrarci almeno un paio di volte l’anno per un’escursione in Appennino (una in inverno e una in estate), o meglio, sull’Appennino centrale: le montagne che Giulio ama così tanto da averci “scritto” – con la luce – due, anzi quasi tre, libri fotografici.

Quest’anno, anche per dare una mano al lancio della campagna di crowdfunding su Kickstarter per il libro Le mie montagne – una storia del Velino Sirente (link in cima alla descrizione), sono sceso più che volentieri a Campo Felice per girare un paio di video backstage – e anche per portare alcuni nuovi accessori in regalo: lo chassis 8×10 mk2, che avete già visto, e un porta filtri 15×15 cm, di cui vi parlerò nel prossimo video.

In questo video vedrete alcune immagini che entreranno a far parte della selezione prima della pubblicazione vera e propria. Ma soprattutto, volevo darvi un assaggio dell’atmosfera spensierata che si crea tra me e Giulio ogni volta che ci incontriamo. Ho provato, con scarso successo, a tradurre alcune delle espressioni colloquiali che usiamo per dirci che ci vogliamo bene (tipo “sbolognamento”, che ho tentato di rendere con “bubble bursting”)… spero apprezziate lo sforzo.
