Ultimate affordable camera – Air force 4×5 mk2

Air Force 4×5 MK2 — Essential Large Format Camera

Air Force 4×5 MK2 is not a “basic” large format camera.

It is a professional 4×5 camera stripped of everything that doesn’t truly matter, designed for photographers who want to work seriously without unnecessary complexity.

  • Approx. 100 g lighter than the previous MK1 version.
  • 40 cm bellows extension, allowing the use of lenses up to 300 mm without modifications.
  • Full rear movements, uncommon in cameras often labeled as “entry level”.
  • Magnetic modular system for bellows and components, fast and reliable.

Air Force 4×5 MK2 is built around a clear idea: not removing features to simplify, but keeping only what is truly useful.

A New Beginning – First experiences and new perspectives in large format photography

Just one year ago, Michael Bertolasi had never touched a view camera.
Today, not only does he use one regularly, but he has decided to share his first experiences with an Air Force 4×5.

Michael is a photographer, educator, and collaborator, and he has created two videos that tell the story of his journey. Over the past few months, he has approached a world that to many may seem distant or complicated, but that can actually become an extraordinary opportunity to discover a new way of making photographs.

The first encounter with the view camera

In the first video, Michael talks about how we met and how he began taking his very first steps with his folding 4×5.
The surprise of holding such a light and portable tool, the fascination of the ground glass, the ritual of loading film holders: it’s the diary of a beginning, with all the emotions and inevitable mistakes that accompany every new adventure.

Does large format photography still make sense in 2025?

The most interesting reflection comes in the second video, where Michael asks a question that every photographer should face sooner or later:

does large format photography still make sense today?

His answer is not technical, but experiential.
With a view camera, the image appears upside down and mirrored. Suddenly, what you thought you knew becomes new again: a face transforms into shapes, lights, and shadows. It’s a way to free yourself from the visual stereotypes we all carry within us, and to truly learn how to see.

Then there is the slowness. Every movement takes time, every decision carries more weight. You cannot just “shoot on the fly”: you need to think, choose, reflect. This is not a limitation, but an invitation to be present in the creative process.

And above all, the relationship with the subject changes. They are no longer a “prey” in front of a lens quickly raised to the eye. With a view camera, the subject becomes an active part of the photograph. The image is born from a collaboration: photographer and subject must both be there, and from this connection an authentic, surprising portrait can emerge—one unlike any other.

A new space for photography

Michael’s journey doesn’t stop here. He is building a physical place to share this vision: his new studio, which will officially open its doors on October 3-4-5.
It will be three days of exhibitions, talks, and community gatherings. A special opportunity to experience firsthand the energy of large format photography and an approach that puts presence, relationship, and vision at the center.

A question for you

So I’ll leave you with the same question Michael raises in his videos:

what are you truly looking for in your photography?

Perhaps large format can be a key to discovering it.

video portafiltri

Essential for color photography – filter holder

Starting today, you can finally shoot color photographs directly onto photographic paper with the new maseidaltonico? kit, available at www.stenopeika.com.

In this video I’ll explain:
📦 What’s inside the maseidaltonico? kit
📸 How the direct-to-positive process works with Fuji Crystal color paper
🎨 Why you need an amber filter (and more!) to achieve accurate color rendition
🧰 Everything about the new Stenopeika filter holder, specifically designed to work with this process:
 • Available in 10×10 and 15×15 cm versions
 • Designed to hold acetate or glass color filters, including the amber Wratten 85B
 • Mounts tool-free on all Stenopeika cameras (and with some effort, even on others)
 • Magnetic compendium
 • Lightweight yet rigid structure, built for field use
🎞️ Also great for black and white photography – because even the world of greys deserves to be filtered in style.

🔧 If you work with unusual formats or out-of-the-box materials (like Cibachrome), I can build custom solutions on request.

We tested the full setup in three different lighting conditions:
✅ In the studio with controlled lighting
✅ Outdoors with studio flashes
✅ In direct sunlight with natural light

🧪 At the heart of the process is the perfect synergy between chemistry and light control. The filter holder plays a key role in achieving a direct color print inside the camera, with no need for a negative.

 • Disponibile in versione 10×10 e 15×15 cm

Abbiamo testato tutto in tre condizioni diverse:
✅ In studio con luci controllate
✅ All’aperto con flash da studio
✅ In pieno sole in luce naturale

forget polaroid (1)

Forget Polaroid: this is true direct color photography with Minutero 2.0 and maseidaltonico?

🎞️ In this video, we put an unprecedented combination to the test: Minutero 2.0 + D100 developer + maseidaltonico RA4 kit.
The result? Full-color positives on photographic paper, developed directly in-camera—no film involved.
A new frontier of direct photography that recalls the magic of Polaroid… but goes far beyond.

📍 Shot at Villa Rospigliosi with Paolo Mazzo, Beatrice Mancini, and Mimo Visconti, this test proves that it’s possible to produce ready-to-view color images on traditional photographic paper, instantly.

📸 During the day, we created three different types of shots:

One fully controlled, using only flash lighting, to evaluate the optimal performance of the process.

One mixed flash + ambient light, a real-life scenario but tricky to balance without a color temperature meter.

And finally, one shot entirely with ambient light, to test the color response in natural conditions.
Three scenarios, three results, one single process.

📷 For filming, we also used the Air Force 8×10—perfect for fast and precise field work.

🔲 Enabling accurate color filtration was the new 10×10 filter holder—essential for large format work with RA4 paper.

👥 Alongside our artistic team, the models included Filippo and Guglielmo from Bellini Foto Srl, Stefano (villa manager), Giulio (the chef), and… Francesca, the ghost who lives in Villa Rospigliosi.
Discreet and reserved, Francesca vanished right at the moment of the shot, leaving Stefano and Giulio posing alone.

🎨 At the end, Beatrice shares some possible artistic applications of this technique: portraits, visual storytelling, performance-based use… and why not, a new way of experiencing color in analog photography.

Positivi a colori su carta fotografica, direttamente in camera, senza pellicola.

🎁 Bonus: the ruler shown in the video is a small gift included with the purchase of any of our cameras, to help you with your large format calculations.

🔧 Useful for large format shooters, those who always forget their calculations, or simply anyone who wants to see two lovely ladies trying to focus on a cheek using a precision ruler.

film holder 4x10 mk2 youtube

4×10 film holder mk2 – A New Dimension in Large Format Photography

As many of you know, I’m always on the lookout for ways to innovate and provide unique solutions to large format photographers. After the success of the Mk2 Film Holders in other popular formats (such as 4×5″, 5×7″, and 8×10″), it’s time to introduce something different—something rare and exciting: the 4×10″.

This panoramic format is perfect for those who love composing horizontally, capturing vast landscapes, architectural shots, or simply creating images with a unique cinematic feel. Like all large format formats, it comes with specific needs. That’s where the 4×10″ Mk2 Film Holder comes in—designed to offer practicality and durability, with the same precision and craftsmanship expected from my products.

Key Features of the 4×10″ Mk2 Film Holder:

  1. Double-Sided Design:
Like the other Mk2 film holders, the 4×10″ version features a double-sided design, allowing you to load and transport two sheets of film at the same time. This is especially helpful during long field days, saving you time and effort when changing film.

  2. Lightweight but Robust:
The body of the film holder is assembled using high-quality plastic, while the dark slides are made of durable aluminum. This combination provides a lightweight, easy-to-handle film holder without compromising strength and longevity.

  3. Handcrafted Precision:
As always, each Mk2 Film Holder is handcrafted in my workshop. I take great care to ensure every piece meets the highest quality standards, providing you with a product that performs with maximum reliability.

  4. The “Techy” Touch:
For those who love keeping track of exposure details, notes, and technical information, I’ve added a small note box on the side of the film holder. Now you can jot down your shot details directly on the film holder, keeping everything organized and easily accessible.

  5. Panoramic Format:
The 4×10″ format is perfect for panoramic compositions, giving you greater freedom in subject placement. While not as widely used as the 4×5″ or 8×10″ formats, it offers a unique aesthetic, ideal for wide-angle shots and sweeping vistas.

Important Note: Compatibility

It’s important to note that the 4×10″ format is not standardized. Therefore, I highly recommend checking the compatibility with your camera before placing an order. This will ensure the film holder fits properly and works seamlessly with your setup.

  3. Precisione Artigianale:
